Public Speaking Tip: Handling Table Topics Like A Boss
If you are new to Toastmasters, there is always a session during our meetings called the "Table Topics".
Table Topics are impromptu speaking sessions where speakers speak on a randomly given topic for 1-2 minutes. Most Toastmasters, even seasoned ones dread the thought of being called during a Table Topics session.
However, Table Topics is the one session of a Toastmasters Club meeting that is the most fun, and where members can learn the most.
When compared to the Table Topics, the prepared assignment speeches are peanuts. This is because members attempting the assignment speeches can take their time to prepare, polish and rehearse them before the actual presentation.
Whereas, during a Table Topics session, speakers have to think on their feet and have very little time to get their thoughts in order.
Here's how we will tackle the Table Topics.
1) Ramble on - the hardest part isn't getting the speech together, it's to get started. But we notice that for most people, once they start talking, the inspiration will come in.
2) You don't necessarily have to agree with the title. State your opinion and defend it with your life.
3) We'll help you along. In the off chance that you get totally stuck, don't worry. We'll ask useful questions that get your thoughts moving. That's what your club members are for.
4) Table Topics normally relate to the theme of the meeting. Each Toastmasters meeting has its own theme. Table Topics questions will usually go with the theme so you have some clues on what you will most likely have to talk about.
5) Remember that it's only 1-2 minutes. That's really not a lot of time. Even if you know very little about a subject, you still can find something to fill that time allocation.
6) Allow yourself time to gather your thoughts before you start. The timer will not start until you start speaking or indicate with your body language that you are ready to start. So you do have time to formulate your speech structure. Just don't take the whole night.
Most of all, have fun. the table topics session is where the fun begins during the meeting. It's where you learn to work under pressure and use the adrenaline rush to your advantage.
