Empowering Others


Our theme for the previous meeting was Empowering Others.  This theme is something very close to our hearts because Toastmasters is all about empowering people to be the best that they can be.  All attendees also agreed that by empowering others, we also empower ourselves.

What an inspirational night!

The following were the speakers for the night.

Speaker #1: Samuel Ch'ng
With Chinese New Year coming up, Samuel shared his views on the taboos and beliefs that the Chinese people have in relation to the festival.  His sharing was funny and insightful at the same time.

Speaker #2: Angelov Tan
Our resident Angel of Love was his usual humorous self.  Angelov's speech was based on Dory of Finding Nemo.  His speech encouraged attendees to look at the bright side of things and never give up.  When things get tough, "Just keep swimming, swimming, swimming!"

Speaker #3: Chulan
What a marvelous guest speaker we had vising from Penang Toastmasters Club.  Chulan did his Level 3 Pathway project on understanding a mentor-mentee relationship.  His eloquence coupled with a remarkably superior vocabulary made his speech flow like poetry in motion.

Another highlight for the night was the Table Topics session.  We did Table Topics campfire style - in the dark with only the single light from a phone for illumination.  The darkness certainly allowed speakers to loosen their inhibitions and speak more freely.

A big thank you to all the guests and members who came and made the meeting happen.  In the spirit of Chinese New Year, President Dennis distributed oranges to all.

Leadership Series: Four Crucial Leadership Characteristics

If you study any great leader, you will find they have many characteristics that contribute to their success.  Below are four that are the most fundamental.  Start with these first and build upon them. Leadership Characteristic #1: Compelling Desire When you take on a leadership role in any project or organization, you must have a goal, a vision of the end game that you want to achieve.  That goal must be driven by a compelling desire for it to happen.  Why do you want to achieve this?  For everyone, it’s the pain/pleasure factor – to get away from a pain or to gain pleasure.  Simple as that.  What is yours? "Nothing is certain in life except death and taxes," so says the quote. So what can you do to make sure you live your life in a way you would be proud of so that in the end, you can say you've really lived and not existed? One of the ways is a bucket list, a list of things that you want to do like travel to far off and exotic places, a skill that you've always wanted to learn or doing something so big that it seemed like an impossible feat to accomplish.
